About Jazz & Contemporary

Common questions and tips from our work with Mansfield customers.

What is the difference between Jazz and Contemporary dance?
Jazz dance is energetic and rhythmic, with sharp movements, kicks, turns, and leaps set to upbeat music. Contemporary blends Ballet technique with modern dance, using floor work, fluid transitions, and improvisation to express emotion. Many dancers study both, since Jazz builds precision and performance energy while Contemporary develops artistry. Studio 65 in Mansfield teaches both styles at several levels.
Does my dancer need Ballet before taking Contemporary?
Not always. Beginners can start Contemporary at an introductory level, but Ballet technique helps with balance, lines, and control as Contemporary gets more advanced. Many dancers take Ballet and Contemporary together. Email Studio 65 at hello@studio65.dance, and the staff will help place your Mansfield-area dancer at the right level based on age and experience.
Are Jazz and Contemporary classes good for older beginners?
Yes. Studio 65 welcomes dancers of all ages and skill levels, including teens and adults who have never taken a class. Classes are grouped by age and level, so older beginners learn the basics with peers instead of younger kids. Jazz is a fun way to build rhythm and confidence, and Contemporary gives newer dancers room for creative expression.

Tip

Listen closely to music to build musicality

Dancers improve faster in Jazz and Contemporary when they really listen to the music. At home, count out songs, notice where the beat drops or the melody slows, and picture how movement could match it. Watching recorded performances in different styles also gives dancers more ideas to draw from. Bring questions to your Studio 65 instructor at the next class.
